Trump jokes about the importance of the 2018 vote. He probably shouldn’t.

On Tuesday night, President Trump spoke at the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List gala and went off script when speaking about the 2018 midterm elections.

“Your vote in 2018 is every bit as important as your vote in 2016 — although I’m not sure I really believe that,” Trump said to the crowd belting laughter. “I don’t know who the hell wrote that line.”

Classic Trump. As much as he loves to keep the attention fixated on himself, he probably realizes that the vote in 2018 is just “every bit as important” as the vote in 2016 in terms of keeping his presidency afloat.

If the Democrats regain control of either the House or the Senate, you might as well call his a “lame duck” presidency. If you think the opposition to Trump is stiff from establishment Republicans in Congress, just wait until the Democrats get ahold of power.

Think of all the times Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., has called for Trump’s impeachment for, as of this moment, completely arbitrary reasons. Those efforts will only intensify if Democrats get a foothold of the House and Senate.

Even Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, has said, on the record, that if Democrats regain control of the House, they will impeach Trump.

On the bright side, at least Trump can tout the latest Reuters poll that showed Democrats trailing for the first time against Republicans in the general ballot.

So, yes, it might seem like a joke to Trump that the 2018 vote matters in terms of stifling the blue wave, but his presidency will be on life support if he can’t get his base out to support Republican candidates come November.
