First world problems: Trump and the Correspondents’ Dinner

The election of Donald Trump has a lot of people on edge. Many of them for good reasons.

Beyond the sort of hackish concerns of partisans, people are genuinely worried about his conflicts of interest. Until a few minutes ago, it looked like his sons were going to be running the same kind of influence-peddling foundation as the one he spent the entire campaign criticizing Hillary Clinton for. They are worried also by his tendency to shoot from the hip, even on sensitive topics like nuclear weapons, without apparently considering the consequences or, often, even knowing much about the subject.

There’s also the possibility that Trump will discontinue daily White House media briefings; spend day after day berating journalists, businesses, and even private citizens on Twitter. He could also try to implement ruinous new taxes on the middle and working classes in the form of tariffs on imported goods.

And yes, those things are all important. … but wait! First things first!

What will the White House correspondents’ dinner look like under President Trump?”

It’s the suddenly ambiguity-laden White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. It seems way off — April 29, 2017 — but the election of Donald Trump is already raising questions and some fears among association members.

“This is unchartered territory,” says a former board member who’s discussed the matter with board members.”We’ve never had a businessman-reality TV star as president, somebody who understands the importance of this particular event.”

A few choice quotations in this story from various folks:

“Will he come? Ask for money to go a charity? Threaten not coming? Or does he see it as a high-profile event, drawing more attention to it?”….

“My advice? Keep your chin up. And pick your battles. This is a cornerstone event thousands look forward to celebrating each year, and 2017 has more eyes on it than ever.”

“Try not to take anything off-color that is said throughout the party personally. Try not to react. Bring the zen to the party.”

And people wonder why Trump won.
