I groaned when Jill Biden
compared
Hispanic people to breakfast tacos not because it was clearly an ethnic slur — I didn’t think it was — but because it was an embarrassingly gauche and obvious piece of flattery. It was too sweet to be wholesome, intended to be cute and to pander.
The first lady made her remarks on July 12, so perhaps Hispanics were in a sour mood about the Bidens two days later when Quinnipiac began a
voter survey
, the results of which made devastating reading for the president and Democrats when they came out on July 20.
The survey showed that only 19% of Hispanics approve of the job Joe Biden is doing in the Oval Office, while 70% disapprove. When the question was refined to separate “somewhat disapprove” from “strongly disapprove,” it found that only 2 in 7 disapproving Hispanics were in the “somewhat” category, while 5 in 7 were in the “strongly” category.
Asked who they want to control Congress, Hispanics favored Republicans over Democrats 42-40 for the House of Representatives and a whopping 56-34 for the Senate. All this means that support for Biden and his party is worse among Hispanics than it is among either black or white voters, a crushing downturn for a party that once thought Hispanics would give Democrats a more or less permanent majority.
No wonder the Blues, feeling bluer by the minute, have turned so brutally on Biden, openly questioning his mental and physical ability to stand again for election as their leader in 2024. With friends like these!
Militant Democrats excoriate him for, among other things, his failure to “fight” on abortion rights, or (yet) to overreach with executive orders imposing extreme (and useless) environmental regulations on the country because Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who represents a coal state, entirely predictably won’t go along with left-wing plans to kill fossil fuels.
Many images come to mind to illustrate the way Democrats are treating Biden. Are they, for example, throwing him out of the basket of a hot air balloon like so much dead weight ballast so they can regain altitude? Are they pushing him adrift on an ice floe like some aging and highly unappealing Frankenstein’s monster? Or are they a bunch of mutinous cutthroats forcing Biden to walk the plank? Democrats would love to be rid of him, for Biden long ago performed the one role for which they were prepared to grant him their support. That was to play the part of a calm, serious-minded, experienced, and moderate politician who could unite the country. In this, he was laughably cast against type, but he did defeat President Donald Trump.
Once he had done so, his party waited the minimum decorous period of time before turning on him. But the truth is that this president was always a one-trick donkey, which meant that once Trump was removed from the presidency, Biden was no longer of any use to the blue gang. He was a husk. And now, his “friends” want to blow the husk away.
