Oakland human trafficking forces Catholic schools out

Out-of-control crime in Oakland, California, has claimed a Catholic school as its latest victim.

The Catholic Diocese of Oakland announced recently that St. Anthony School in Oakland would be closing down because of serious security concerns that included the presence of human trafficking operations around the school.

The school’s closure is a stark reminder of the consequences that follow the refusal to maintain basic law and order in a community. School should be a sanctuary for children, and when it is not, those who can go elsewhere, do.

Of all the criminal activity to hit the school, human trafficking is perhaps the worst that can affect young students. Parents who send their child to the school would have every reason to fear the hellish nightmare of human traffickers kidnapping their child at school.

Oakland was one of the biggest cities in 2020 and 2021 to get caught up in the “defund the police” craze. And unsurprisingly, the city has seen a massive increase in crime. In 2023, the city had its highest homicide rate of the past 10 years, and in the same year, car theft increased by 44% and burglaries by 23%.

But of all the crimes that the city is refusing to prosecute and crack down on, you would think human trafficking would not be among them. Even the most radical abolish the police activists do not believe that child sex traffickers should be allowed to roam the streets freely.

For the Diocese of Oakland and the school to be so aware of the problem in their community that they close a school over it, one has to ask why on earth the Oakland Police Department and the City of Oakland have not investigated the area to root out this horrid filth.

The closure of St. Anthony’s School is a reminder that crimes have real victims. And Oakland’s decision to turn a blind eye to human trafficking in the area raises deeply disturbing questions. In the meantime, the children of this California city will continue to suffer.
