As Democratic-run sanctuary cities continue to struggle, the Democrats in charge of them need to recognize that President Joe Biden isn’t coming to their rescue.
Denver’s latest struggle in dealing with the illegal immigrants it has invited into the country is, of course, money. The city is now going to cut the hours for some city workers so their wages can be redirected toward the crisis. The $4.3 million the city is going to move is a drop in the bucket compared to the $180 million cost the city is still trying to cover.
In the meantime, Biden is making a visit to the border in what is no doubt nothing more than a photo op and a way to check “visit the border” off his list. We know this because he is visiting Brownsville, Texas, one of the sleepiest border crossings he could choose. Brownsville will finish February with an average of about 17 border crossings per day, making it the 29th busiest Border Patrol station.
Unlike Brownsville, Eagle Pass is a much smaller town dealing with far more crossings. Also unlike Brownsville, Eagle Pass is represented in Congress by a Republican. Biden is visiting a Democratic stronghold to help himself and a Democratic congressman try to avoid the political fallout the border crisis will have on the 2024 election. He isn’t going to see the effects of the crisis firsthand in Eagle Pass or any other crossing that is actually dealing with the bulk of the crisis. The border isn’t a serious crisis to him outside of its effects on his reelection campaign.

Biden isn’t coming to Denver’s aid. Or New York City, where Mayor Eric Adams wants to revise the city’s sanctuary status. Or Chicago, where Mayor Brandon Johnson keeps considering whether or not to punt illegal immigrants out into the cold. Biden wants to throw all those cities some money, sure, but only to keep politicians like Adams off his back during an election year. Even if Republicans ever make the inexcusable decision of letting that money flow through, it will run out eventually, especially when Texas keeps sending more illegal immigrants to those cities.
The problem is going to persist. It is going to persist because Biden does not care about the border, keeping it secure, or helping the towns, such as Eagle Pass, that are shouldering the burden. He also doesn’t care about the big Democratic cities that have been hoisted by their own sanctuary petards. All Biden cares about is clinging to power, just as he has for the over half his life he has spent in politics. He isn’t coming to the rescue for Denver or any other sanctuary city any time soon.
