The NAACP wants to impose its toxic racial politics on sports

The NAACP has unfortunately become one of the most racially toxic organizations in the country. It has spent the last few years trying to weaponize sports along racial lines to win political fights.

The NAACP sent a letter to the NCAA addressed to current and future black college athletes, telling them not to go to public colleges in Florida after Gov. Ron DeSantis defunded DEI programs at those colleges. “This is not about politics,” NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson wrote. “It’s about the protection of our community, the progression of our culture, and most of all, it’s about your education, and your future.”

But it is about politics. All DEI programs do is foster racialized liberal division, promoting false narratives about how people of certain skin colors are inherently oppressed and systemically discriminated against and people of other certain skin colors are inherently privileged and oppressors by default. DEI promotes racism and division, again based on false narratives, such as the contention that police are racist and regularly shoot unarmed black people.

Worse than that, though, are the tactics the NAACP is employing. For one, while the letter addresses black athletes, it was sent to NCAA president Charlie Baker, with the obvious goal being to pressure Baker and the NCAA into imposing sanctions on Florida universities for axing their DEI programs. It is telling that a group that believes it is systematically discriminated against thinks it has the influence to pressure a billion-dollar athletic governing body, isn’t it?

Aside from that, though, the NAACP is asking young black athletes to sacrifice their dreams of playing for the Florida Gators or the Florida State Seminoles. It is asking them to do so on behalf of DEI bureaucrats and a political agenda that tells those black athletes that the world is out to get them. And this is not the first time the NAACP has done this: the organization told black professional athletes in 2021 that their families would not be safe in Texas because the state wouldn’t let them kill their unborn children and requires voter ID during elections.

These are partisan fights that the NAACP wants to impose on everyone by foisting them on sports in order to make its point to fans. The group also wants young black athletes to jeopardize their academic, professional, and financial futures in order to make that point. This is the kind of racial toxicity and partisan division that should be snuffed out of every area of society, not imposed on the most uniting and nonpolitical aspect of our lives.
