In their final effort to derail the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh (because he doesn’t pledge allegiance to Roe v. Wade) Democrats will drag out one of their favorite old props: Convicted felon, disbarred lawyer, and cover-up artist John Dean.
What is Dean’s authority on Kavanaugh? Why should anyone listen to what he has to say?
Quite literally, the reason Democrats see him as an authority is that he was White House counsel for corrupt former President Richard Nixon and acted as the “master manipulator of the cover-up,” according to the FBI.
After serving out his felony sentence, Dean was disbarred and couldn’t work as a lawyer. So he took one of the most well-traveled paths back to Washington respectability: going to bat for Democrats and the Left by attacking his former party.
His post-Watergate books include Worse than Watergate, in which he argued for the impeachment of George W. Bush, and Conservatives without Conscience, which was of that hoary old genre of books for liberals: Republicans had principles exactly 12-30 years ago, but no longer do.
Recall Dean was no noble whistleblower in Watergate. He was basically Michael Cohen of the age — a cover-up coordinator who sang when the Feds caught him in his obvious crimes.
“The actions of John W. Dean at the White House … were purposefully designed to mislead and thwart the Bureau’s legitimate line of inquiry,” the FBI wrote. Dean, it seems, helped coordinate the cover-up of the break-in, earning him the FBI’s title of “master manipulator of the cover-up.”
Why this guy would be considered a good witness this week is a mystery. Maybe Democrats think they can portray him as a Republican and get “even Republican John Dean …” coverage from the gullible press.
But Dean’s not a Republican. He’s not currently registered as a Republican. He has called for the impeachment of the past two Republican presidents, while opposing the impeachment of Democrat Bill Clinton who quite obviously abused his presidential power and perjured himself to cover up for his sexual impropriety with a much younger subordinate.
When Clinton corruptly pardoned fugitive financier Marc Rich after Rich’s wife donated to Clinton’s presidential library, Dean argued against a congressional investigation.
In 2008, Dean made it clear he was choosing between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton — which is to say, he is a Democrat.
In sum: For their closing argument, Dems are bringing in a functional Democrat who is a disbarred lawyer who was convicted for a cover-up after being the top lawyer for the only president ever driven from office, and who defended the corrupt acts of an impeached president.
