Mike Antonucci of EIA Online points out yet another example of teachers’ unions spending their members’ hard-earned dues money on issues that have little to do with education, the National Education Association is spending $528,000 to defeat a ballot initiative that would raise money for research on brain injuries and mental illness.
Why? That’s a great question that a lot of people are asking, including former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
Apparently the state teachers union is worried about the brain research funding crowding out other state government funding.
“Here we have a ballot initiative that could suck all the air out completely,” Eric Feaver, president of the MEA-MFT, told the Associated Press. “I don’t want to see any more obstacles to a major infrastructure bill. Consequently, that’s why we’re opposed.”
If approved, the initiative would authorize the state to issue $200 million in bonds over the next 10 years for the brain research.
It’s also another example of how liberals, who most often decry the role of money in politics, use money in politics to their advantage.
The committee campaigning in favor of the initiative has less than $4,000 left. “$500,000 at the last minute hopefully doesn’t buy an election in Montana,” the group’s leader said.
