Trump’s criticism of Rand Paul is wrong and misguided

President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account on Tuesday to criticize Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) for being reluctant to support the much-ballyhooed “big, beautiful bill.” The rebuke stems from the senator’s hesitation to vote for the bill over concerns that it will have significant negative ramifications regarding the country’s national debt.

When Trump was on the campaign trail and in the early days of his second term, he supported eliminating reckless government spending and controlling the budget. He was on the path to bring fiscal responsibility to D.C. and save the government from itself. He issued an executive order that created the Department of Government Efficiency, with Elon Musk tasked with reining in spending. However, at some point between Jan. 20, 2025, and now, the focus on that objective has disappeared.
