Today’s Bright Bulb: Set a virus to fight a parasite. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Malaria Research Institute found a virus that infects the mosquito spreading malaria, which sickens half a billion people and kills more than 1 million every year, but does not infect humans. Now all they have to do is figure out how to make the virus lethal or incapacitating.
Today’s Dim Bulb: A self-inflicted community
WHO: Hooligans living in the Durness Court community in Anne Arundel County, where residents complain about drug activity.
WHAT: A crowd of “disorderly” people surrounded Anne Arundel police officers backing up two bicycle officers who pursued a man loitering in the street who is under house arrest on drug and handgun charges.
WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Duh! Attacking police officers who actually try to get predators and sociopaths who prey upon the good people in their neighborhoods is not the best way to build that village everybody’s been droning on about for a few decades now.
Today’s Quote:
“That amounts to them saying, we’re to blame for taking the state police’s initial response seriously, which is a pretty extraordinary assertion by their own lawyers.”
— David Rocah, staff attorney for the ACLU of Maryland on state police response to a suit seeking more documents in admitted surveillance of lawful activist groups.
