Quick takes: Sustainable energy and gambling policy

BRIGHT BULB: Constellation Energy sustains. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index put Constellation on its world list for the fourth consecutive year and in the Top 10 of North American utilities. The Index tracks financial, environmental and social performance of leading sustainability driven companies. It focuses on transparency and measures stock market performance.

OUTRAGE: Not very amusing

  • Who: State gaming statutes
  • What: Open, flagrant, institutional hypocrisy
  • Why it’s a bad idea: Sure, let’s have a ludicrous sham undermine respect for  law in general and state government in particular.  For a pittance the state sells 7,200 state liquor license holders the right to operate video gaming machines “for amusement only.” Yeah, right. Give us all a huge break on the credulity factor. State Comptroller Peter Franchot’s Quixotic assault on illegal use of the machines — agents will need six years to check all establishments — at least jibes with his opposition to slots, but it cannot overcome the inherent and obvious twist in the law.
  • Why they are doing it: This gives state government and illegal gambling interests the facade they need to pretend Maryland does not allow evil gambling, but at the same time profit from it. They are not fooling anybody. The best solution is to approve legal slot machines so the gambling that is going on will contribute at least something to the greater public good. Ultimately the General Assembly should outlaw this “for amusement only” farce. It ain’t funny. Fight illegal gambling by supporting legal slots.
