WHAT: A recent audit found that the Housing Division overpaid by $328,000 the landlords of local families receiving rental assistance.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: The waiting list for rental assistance is nearly 5,000 families long. The funds squandered though careless overpayments could have assisted 48 families. Also, the audit found that in six of the 12 cases where the Housing Division had discovered cheating, the aid recipient concerned was not removed from the program; and not one of the cases led to legal action.
