If Democrats become the victims of a massive electoral defeat next year, it’s doubtful that they will understand why. Not one of them seems to have any awareness of how ridiculous they can be.
Case in point, former Vice President Joe Biden, in earnest, just said he would challenge President Trump to a push-up contest as a way to measure his own manliness.
The outburst came with great assist from MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski after she asked Biden in an interview how he would “fight” Trump, given that he “lies,” “bullies,” and “doesn’t play fair.”
This is the great, unpoppable bubble that liberals in Washington and the news media have inflated. Inside of it, everyone believes Trump is the beast who emerged from the abyss that only a hero of great might and integrity can slay. Outside of it, people shrug. Some of them even like the guy.
Biden, who will be 77 by the time there’s a general election debate next year, said he’d say to Trump, “I’d say, ‘C’mon, Donald. C’mon, man. How many push-ups you want to do here, pal?’ I mean jokingly. You know. ‘C’mon, run with me.’”
This is beyond cringe-worthy. It’s pathetic.
One of Trump’s greatest advantages is that he knows he’s an overweight clown. Or did you think he was serious last week when he referred to himself as “so great looking and smart, a true Stable Genius”?
The great irony is that therein lies his strength and masculinity. Trump doesn’t attempt to physically prove himself. He makes fun of everyone else who feels like they have to. And then, we laugh with him.
This is precisely what happened Monday when the so-called “squad” of congresswomen hosted an awkward, self-righteous press conference that was presumably intended to make Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York., et al., look brave in the face of Trump’s tweets about them. They didn’t look brave. They looked like a therapy session, each one of the members offering encouraging smiles and hugs for one another.
Without a flicker of self-awareness, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Massachusetts, began the press conference urging the public “to not take the bait.” What followed was nearly half an hour of “the squad” denouncing Trump, aired live and in full on Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN.
Trump may be terrible at fixing the immigration crisis, healthcare, Iran and North Korea, but there’s no denying that he excels at getting his opponents to “take the bait.” And when they invariably do, it reminds us all how lame, self-serious, and condescending the typical politician is.
Democrats and liberals in the news media stare in wonder at Trump, curious how someone can be so absurd. Their problem is that Trump knows that voters look at them and think the same thing.
