BRIGHT BULB Schools take “Obama Day” off
The Baltimore City Public School System’s decision to close for Barack Obama’s inauguration is a perfect day for a furlough. Mayor Dixon has not proposed that for city workers, but if widespread truancy was expected anyway, it would help the cash-strapped city save money and give students the opportunity to witness history live.
OUTRAGE: Save the … well, just save it!
WHO: The Maryland Historical Trust, the Baltimore City Commission for Historic and Architectural Preservation, and other local historical preservation groups
WHAT: They oppose part of the redevelopment of the Lexington Square area because the development group plans to tear down at least one building the advocacy groups think should be preserved.
WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: If they want it preserved, they should buy it and preserve it. As it stands, that area is a dump. Not every historical building can — or should — be saved. Unless someone builds something in Lexington Square, it will continue to be an empty and useless block.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“I couldn’t let him just talk like that. … I’ve built my life on not lettin’ nobody disrespect me. … Kill or be killed, you know what I’m saying?” – Antajuan Wilson, a Columbia man who admitted to fatally shooting Bryan Adams on a Wilde Lake sidewalk
