President-elect Joe Biden is apparently taking a step to stop the hyperventilating over who’s next to get vaccinated and when.
Biden’s transition team said Friday that once he takes office, he’s going to direct the administration to release the millions of vaccines that are currently being held back for the purpose of administering second doses to those who have already received one.
The two-dose strategy was intended to maximize the efficacy of the Moderna and Pfizer-produced vaccines, which runs close to 95%. One dose cuts the efficacy rate in half, but it frees up more of the supply so that it can be administered to more people.
Yes, good. Flood the country with as much vaccine as possible and give it to anyone and everyone who wants it. A single dose may be less effective for any one individual, but reducing the number of infections overall is the most pressing matter at hand, as hospital systems around the country strain to cope with patients who have fallen critically ill from the coronavirus.
A quick reduction in severe cases of the virus by even just 30% would be welcomed by any healthcare provider.
Making the vaccines right now as available to the public as possible is the right move.
