While the rest of the political world was glued to the drama unfolding over healthcare last Friday, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, published a tweet that went largely unnoticed.
Just before 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Grassley, whose Twitter account is among the most entertaining in Congress, wrote, “Just read in WSJ where afl/cio PresTrumka thinks Trump is bk tracking on trade agenda.”
“Richard,” he said, addressing the president of the powerful AFL-CIO, “don’t ‘wet your pants the Pres will deliver.”
Richard, don’t wet your pants.
In an article published the day before, Richard Trumka had expressed growing skepticism over the Trump administration’s commitment to the trade policies Trump campaigned on.
“There are two wings in the White House,” he told the Wall Street Journal, “There is a Wall Street Wing and the Trump-Agenda Wing. The Wall Street Wing is starting to hijack Trump’s trade agenda.”
In the past, Trump and Trumka have found common ground over trade issues, with the latter heralding the president’s withdrawal from TPP as “an important first step toward a trade policy that works for working people.”
Whether they’ll continue to find common ground is yet to be determined. For his part, however, Sen. Grassley is pretty confident everything will turn out alright.
