From James Comey to Tom Brady, the best (or worst) of April Fools' Day

April Fools’ Day is finally over, which means we can all rest easy for another year until the world’s pranksters reemerge for their nationally sanctioned day of mischief. If you weren’t careful, you may have fallen for some fake pregnancies, fake retirements, and a fake presidential run. From Washington to Hollywood, some pranksters didn’t mess around.

James Comey

The former FBI director and A Higher Loyalty author tweeted that he was the next candidate to jump into the 2020 presidential race. By Monday afternoon, however, he was ready to explain himself. “But could you imagine a president who used this website to make dad jokes rather than to hurl insults?” he wrote. “Happy #AprilFools. #VoteDem2020.”

Ted Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, announced his support for the Green New Deal, but it didn’t take more than a look at the link on his website to see it was an elaborate scheme to get people to read why he opposes the plan to “save the world” from “bovine flatulence.” Color Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., shocked.

Tom Brady

The New England Patriots quarterback joined Twitter on Monday, only to announce his retirement. Just over an hour later, he recanted: “Was this a bad joke?”

Justin Bieber

The millennial newlywed posted a photo of an ultrasound to his Instagram account, followed by pictures of his wife, Hailey Bieber, clutching her belly in a doctor’s office. To debunk the story, he finally uploaded an ultrasound photo edited to include a puppy. Some fans thought the announcement went too far, but, unfortunately, fake pregnancy announcements are not so uncommon on April 1.

US Open

This was, by far, the best prank played on April Fools’ Day. The only tragedy is that it isn’t real. The US Open tweeted that it would add puppies to 2019 tournament’s ballperson team. Sure, the little dogs would have difficulty picking up and throwing tennis balls, but look at the pup in the picture — so athletic! Plus, the new team members would at least boost morale.
