Do Americans think the federal government does too much?

According to Gallup polling, a majority of Americans think the federal government is doing too much.

About 54 percent of Americans think the federal government does too much, while 41 percent say the feds should do more.

Gallup has polled Americans on this question for more than 20 years with largely the same trend. One notable exception: After the Sept. 11 attacks, half of Americans said the government should do more while 40 percent thought it was doing too much.

Unsurprisingly, there is a wide partisan split on this issue. Roughly four-in-five Republicans say the government does too much, while only one-in-four Democrats say the same. The 58-point gap between the two parties is at its widest point since Gallup started giving partisan breakdowns on this issue in 2001.
