It was obvious when the Supreme Court announced its decision on partisan gerrymandering Thursday that Democrats would take the excuse to keep complaining that Republican electoral victories are by definition illegitimate.
A few hours after the court’s decision was announced, 2020 Democratic primary candidate Seth Moulton proved that this is exactly what Democrats plan to do when he claimed gerrymandering had cost his party several elections, including the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race.
“This is absurd and un-American. Every presidential candidate should commit to running on a New Voting Rights Act,” the Massachusetts Democrat said Thursday on social media.
Mouton then added, “Make no mistake: the partisan gerrymandering SCOTUS just allowed is also racial gerrymandering – a modern-day Jim Crow. Just look at what happened with Stacey Abrams last cycle in Georgia.”
Just one problem: Gerrymandering involves redrawing district lines. The Georgia gubernatorial race is statewide. There are no district lines involved.

Moulton and like-minded partisans decrying the court’s announcement conveniently omit the fact that the decision lets stand a Democratic gerrymander in Maryland. It is so weird how details like that keep slipping through the cracks.
“This is Mitch McConnell’s doing,” the representative continued. “If he cared about his country more than his party, we would have a Supreme Court that actually represents the American people.” Because the American people always agree with Seth Moulton, amirite?
Moulton went on to endorse dangerous power-grabs that other Democrats have bandied about. “We need to abolish the filibuster … And while we’re at it, we need to abolish the electoral college. Because the American people should choose our next president (and therefore our Supreme Court Justices), not an outdated institution that counts some votes more than others.”
Better get your hands on all that power first before you brag publicly about how you’re going to abuse it, congressman.
