The past three weeks might have served as a reminder as to why former President Donald Trump was loath to concede pretty much anything to Democrats. They take even the smallest concession as an invitation to go on a political rampage.
Following the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, Republicans were quick to denounce everyone who participated, but most of them weren’t eager to blame Trump directly for what happened. Democrats and liberals in the media called that cowardly, but in fact, it was smart.
After Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming came out as the most prominent Republican to cast blame Trump’s way, Democrats and liberals in the media immediately used it to justify not only a second impeachment, but also a second trial to convict Trump even after he’d left office, barring him from holding federal office again.
Regardless of whether such a thing is even constitutional (plenty of people think it’s not), Democrats and the social media executives who are trying to bury Trump and his supporters several miles deep should realize that there will be consequences for them.
They succeeded in denying Trump a second term, but they didn’t eliminate his tens of millions of supporters, nor have they proven that to have learned anything at all about why so many people were willing to reelect a loud-mouthed vulgarian in the middle of a raging pandemic that had kneecapped the economy and resulted in more than 200,000 deaths.
And I’m sorry, but “white supremacy” was not the reason. It never was, and (inconveniently for this self-serving explanation) there is the fact that Trump expanded his base of support with nonwhite voters. Yet, racism is once again the only excuse the media have because they’d rather not face up to the fact that not everyone believes in open borders and not everyone is preoccupied with making sure biological males can compete in women’s sports.
I don’t expect Trump to run for office again, but attempting to ensure that he legally can’t doesn’t only penalize him. It muzzles the people who felt that he was their voice. It says to them that they’re not worth hearing now, and it was a mistake to hear from them before.
The choice to end Trump’s time in office was already settled by the voters. To tell them that they effectively will never be allowed to make that decision for themselves again is un-American.
We’ve seen what happens when enough of the electorate feels alienated from its own country. Democrats are taking big steps to make it happen again.
