Education Week’s Andrew Ujifusa reports that two researchers have joined Donald Trump’s transition team for education: Williamson Evers, a research fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution, and Gerard Robinson, a resident fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.
Robinson taught inner-city fifth-graders at the start of his career. Before working at AEI, he led the state department of education in Virginia, then in Florida. He was also president of the Black Alliance for Educational Options. Robinson’s recent work and writings at AEI focus on school choice, race and criminal justice reform.
Evers served on two separate California commissions to propose educational standards for each grade. He was the assistant secretary of education for policy in the federal Department of Education from 2007-09, and was a senior adviser to then-Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings in 2007.
He also spent six months in Iraq in 2003 as an education adviser to the country’s transitional government. Some of his recent work has focused on historical education, as well as the Common Core educational standards.
