Today’s outrage: Buy American, but don’t force it

Published January 23, 2009 5:00am ET

WHO: Harford County lawmakers
WHAT
: They introduced legislation to require any U.S. or Maryland flag displayed on state property to be American-made and to require all flags sold in the state to be American-made.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Do lawmakers really think buying American flags will turn around the state and national economy? How much money would this bill generate for Maryland? Enough to cover the $2 billion budget hole?
WHAT’S NEXT
: Should we require Marylanders only to buy American cars to save U.S. auto makers?
WHERE TO VENT
: Call Sen. Nancy Jacobs (R) at 410-841-3158 and Sen. Barry Glassman (R) at 410-841-3603.

Today’s dim bulb: Just sue for it

Being vigilant in protecting the city’s business is one thing. But going after a bank for lending money and travel companies for not paying taxes owed by individual hotels strike us as cheap shots aimed at those with deep pockets — or at least formerly deep pockets. If Baltimore needs money so badly it should turn its new found fiscal aggressiveness toward cutting the budget, not going after the few businesses who find it worthwhile to serve customers in Baltimore.

Quote of the day

“It just seems rather unpatriotic to be buying flags made in China. … Basically, I’m happy that this starts the conversation on buying American.” — Sen. Nancy Jacobs, R-Harford County, on a new bill that would prohibit the sale of foreign-made flags in Maryland.
