The House’s debate Wednesday of the articles of impeachment against President Trump was already a clown show. Then Rep. Barry Loudermilk took the floor and made an already-pitiful display even dumber.
“Before you take this historic vote today, one week before Christmas, I want you to keep this in mind: When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers,” said the Georgia Republican.
He added, “During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president and this process.”
I am not even mad — I am impressed.
Pontius Pilate paraded a man he believed to be innocent before an angry mob to decide his life by popular vote. The Roman governor ultimately abandoned the innocent man, leaving him to be beaten and broken by Roman soldiers and then nailed to a cross to die a slow, agonizing death by suffocation.
Loudermilk may have had a point that the process was unfair, or that Trump was not given the right to confront his accuser, or that he was being held by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the un-American standard of guilty until proven innocent. But, I think it’s safe to say that Trump has things a bit better than Jesus did.
