To much liberal fanfare, Canada announced that they plan on increasing immigration admissions to 350,000 by 2021, just in time for American leftists to move there in case Trump wins re-election.
But hold your horses there, Alec Baldwin — you might want to stay south of the border because the Canadian government waited a day to drop the other shoe. Canadian border control will “substantially” increase deportations of illegal immigrants — namely, failed refugee claimants, national security threats, criminals, and people overstaying their visas.
Of course, this is a sensible policy. An increase in legal immigration increases a tax base. Illegal immigration may not. You don’t want people who don’t pay into the system freeloading off of hard-working immigrants who waited in the back of the immigration line and followed the rules. The government’s economic advisory council recommended that Canada admit nearly half a million people legally in 2016 to help staff regions of the country with excessively tight job markets. Further, the country plans to admit more refugees. And part of that means sending back the ones who failed to meet legal requirements.
While liberals laud our northern neighbors for increasing legal immigration, never forget that Trudeau government’s increase in deportations is making Canada’s welcoming posture toward legal immigrants feasible.
