The Guardian reports that 94-year-old Prince Philip drove President Obama, the First Lady and Queen Elizabeth II during the Obamas’ visit to the United Kingdom.
The drive lasted about 400 yards, from Marine One’s landing spot on the grounds of Windsor Castle to the castle walls.
President Obama went to help Queen Elizabeth get out of the car, but she managed to exit under her own power.
Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband, will turn 95 in May. The Guardian describes him as a “very experienced driver.”
Typically, the Secret Service agent that drives the presidential limo is highly trained in evasion techniques, should they become necessary.
“If the president’s security detail harboured any nervousness about the age of the driver, they did not betray it as the royal couple and the leader of the free world and his wife headed off for a private lunch,” Guardian writer Caroline Davies observed.
Apparently the car had been arranged so that it did not have to be reversed or turned around by its driver.
Remember: in the U.K. the driver’s side is the right side of the car. In the photo above, Obama is a passenger, even though he’s sitting on the left side of the car.
