The Democrats never pay. The Left never is made to apologize. Liberal politicians are never forced to “own” the misdeeds of leftist radicals the way conservatives have random racist actions forced down their throats.
All of which explains why the always unlikeable but increasingly unhinged speaker Nancy Pelosi can keep insisting that Republicans are “trying to get away with murder, actually — the murder of George Floyd.” Even more vile than the time Joe Biden told black Americans that Mitt Romney would “put you all back in chains,” Pelosi’s repeated statement about murder is despicable demagoguery unacceptable in American discourse.
By the standards to which the establishment media hold conservatives, Pelosi’s statement, and media condemnations of it, should lead every broadcast for at least a week, not to mention front pages of every major newspaper.
As my colleague Becket Adams explained, Pelosi was speaking not about some right-winger’s spirited defense of police brutality, but about a good faith effort to find common ground on police reform — an effort led by black Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, who has been pushing for reform for years.
Worse, when given a chance to recant — as if she had just spoken over-dramatically in the heat of the moment — the execrable Pelosi doubled down. She said she would “absolutely, positively not” apologize, even after specifically being reminded that it was the earnest Scott’s bill to which she was referring.
Frankly, it is the Democrats’ refusal even to allow debate on any police reform bill that may be responsible for more people being “murdered.” On important subjects, reasonable people push forward with the things on which they do agree, and then come back later to negotiate about the proposals on which they differ. That’s exactly what Scott and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged to do, but Democrats, putting lives at risk for the sake of political posturing, refuse even to begin the legislative dialogue. Shame on them.
The problem here is even bigger, though. Whenever a single, rogue Republican candidate says something stupid or offensive, the media demand every other Republican in the nation, repeatedly, answer for it. (Think of Todd Akin in Missouri in 2012 or Sharron Angle in Nevada in 2010, both of whom were hung like nooses around every Republican candidate’s necks.) But when not just a random candidate but the very speaker of the House is a Democrat, the media leave her Democratic colleagues alone.
Whenever a random shooter commits mayhem, every Republican is held to blame. But when leftist criminals deface and destroy public property, ransack the shops of innocent black store owners, beat up passersby, and murder security guards, all in the name of “ending racism,” well, Democratic politicians are not expected to answer for the horrific violence, nor do many of them step forward to denounce it forcefully.
Yet even though leaders of the lawless and dangerous Seattle “autonomous zone” called CHOP have openly allied themselves with Biden, the media have let Biden go without a single comment on what is a civic atrocity. Compare that with how Republicans were tarred in 2000 with the 1998 “dragging” death of a Texas black man. Even “nice guy” Democrat Joe Lieberman endorsed the smear of Republicans, and the media all but applauded.
Well, it’s time someone put it plainly. When it comes to responding to vicious mobs trying to undermine the very rule of law itself, the establishment media and Democrats are both getting away with murder.
