Robert Mueller’s probe was still a ‘witch hunt’

Just because President Trump was cleared by special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation doesn’t make it any less of a witch hunt than it was. It means Trump was cleared in spite of it being the witch hunt that it was.

The Washington Post’s editorial board said that the summary of Muller’s report delivered Sunday contains “a lesson for Mr. Trump and his partisans, too: The Mueller probe was no witch hunt.”

CNN’s John Avlon, no doubt impersonating his best anchorman voice, reprimanded Trump for having “no appreciation for the impartiality of the Mueller investigation.”

An article in Politico noted with regret that Trump had “showed little interest in healing or national unity” following the conclusion of Muller’s probe.

Peter Baker of the New York Times said Monday on MSNBC “Morning Joe” that, “The notion that the system came after Mr. Trump in the form of Mr. Mueller and failed to take him down will fit neatly into the president’s narrative of grievance and victimization.”

All of this makes sense if you willingly forget that Democrats and the media demanded one thing in 2017: A special counsel with unlimited authority to find out whether Trump and his 2016 campaign colluded with Russia in its interference of the presidential election.

After two years, we found nothing even remotely close to what we thought we were looking for. We did, however, find a series of indictments and convictions related to bank fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and process crimes like lying to the FBI and Congress.

“Witch hunt,” as defined by the online dictionary is “an intensive effort to discover and expose disloyalty, subversion, dishonesty, or the like, usually based on slight, doubtful, or irrelevant evidence.”

What were they looking for? Disloyalty to the United States by the president.

What did they find? Irrelevant evidence, the most severe of which came in the form of crimes committed years before the launch of Trump’s campaign.

The Mueller probe was, by the plain definition, a witch hunt. It doesn’t matter that Trump escaped.
