Dim Bulb — Sept. 8, 2008

WHO: Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.

WHAT: The chairwoman of the Senate Transportation-HUD Appropriations subcommittee predicts difficult times if John McCain is elected president: “I think … the way that this country is supposed to work — with people elected from across the country to represent their districts and fight for what they believe in — would be seriously undermined.”

WHY: What Murray, who is also the secretary of the Democratic Conference, really means is that McCain will make it tough for her and other spendthrifts in Congress to keep the earmark machine going, even though the secretive process is exactly the opposite of how the country is supposed to work.

CURE: Vote for candidates who renounce earmarks.
