Teach for America gets failing grade on financial management

WHO: Teach for America: The publicly funded group that recruits teachers for low-income communities was graded poorly by a recent report from the Inspector-General (IG) of the U.S. Department of Education. The group couldn’t account for how it spent hundreds of thousands of federal tax dollars.

WHAT: The IG found repeated instances in which the group had no documentation, including none for a $123,878 training program, $277,262 for food and lodging and $26, 812 for teacher certifications.

WHY: CBS News investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson said IG auditors even found no documentation that any teachers actually attended one class or that it had even been held. A Teachers for America vice president said he was “confident” the money was spent properly but could offer no proof.
