Frustrated liberals have been asking for the last four years what it’s going to take for President Trump’s supporters to abandon him. Because, like, don’t they know he’s about to be impeached!?
New York Times columnist David Brooks attempted to answer the question last week by imagining a conversation with someone he simply referred to as “Flyover Man,” because apparently he didn’t know a single real Trump supporter.
It never seems to occur to liberals that perhaps the real problem isn’t that a lot of people continue supporting the president even though he can be strange, vulgar, and sometimes even stupid. The real problem just might be that even if Trump is a gleeful liar and a petty narcissist, the alternative is so much worse.
It’s supposed to be unthinkable that Trump has even one supporter at all, because aren’t they ashamed to vote for someone that the media have called a white supremacist? And don’t forget, he’s about to be impeached!
But if 40% of the country can stomach all of that, shouldn’t that say something about the choice we’re given?
The choice right now is between Trump and a field of Democrats who want to further wreck the already terrible healthcare system, open up the southern border to every poor person south of Texas, and obsess over grievances of transgender people.
There’s only one person standing between Trump supporters and an endless flood of such policies. That that person happens to have a preoccupation with Fox News, a tendency to violate “the norms,” and a history of dumb business ventures is so easy to overlook when you consider that the only other option is someone who’s going to force them to give up their cars and guns and then tell them to “learn to code.”
That Trump maintains even just 10% of support from the country should say less about him and more about just how nauseating the alternative would be.
It’s not a mystery why a lot of people still support Trump. Just look at the choices they have.
