It looks like those “community-based public safety programs” aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.
Minneapolis residents are finding out, after their city council voted to disband the city’s police department, that when push comes to shove, there’s no one there to save them.
“Residents are asking, ‘Where are the police?’” Councilman Jamal Osman said during a session on Tuesday. “That is the only public safety option they have at the moment. MPD. They rely on MPD. And they are saying they are nowhere to be seen.”
Minneapolis, like other big cities, has been racked by violence, looting, and vandalism since the George Floyd incident. From Minnesota Public Radio:
You don’t say. But I thought if there were no police, blacks and whites would live in a garden of harmony. Who knew?
Perhaps Minneapolis, a city run by Democrats, just like every other major metropolis, now realizes that undermining, disparaging, and divesting from police departments wasn’t the right move. Perhaps its realized that when you get rid of law enforcement, there is no one there to enforce the law.
