Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s, R-Ky., campaign to tie his Democratic opponent, Alison Lundergan Grimes, to President Obama continues apace, the latest example being a campaign ad released Monday underscoring her refusal to say who she voted for in 2012.
Grimes has been approached on numerous occasions and asked point blank whether she voted in 2012 for President Obama, a man who continues to poll extremely poorly in the Bluegrass State.
In each instance, Grimes has refused to answer the question, allowing the McConnell campaign to characterize her nonresponse as a “dodge” and “the non-answer heard around the country.”
The McConnell ad includes NBC News’ Chuck Todd who said of Grimes’ refusal to answer: “I think she disqualified herself.”
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in Kentucky this week to help Grimes, who has called herself a “Clinton Democrat through and through,” try to sway Bluegrass voters in the final weeks leading up to the Nov. 4 midterm elections.
McConnell currently leads Grimes 45.5 percent to 42.5 percent in the polls, according the Real Clear Politics weighted average.
The GOP needs to win a net six seats if it wants to control the Senate after the midterm elections. McConnell has fought bitterly to maintain his seat and increase the Republican Party’s chances of capturing Congress’ upper chamber.
