On Friday, students in central Florida took part in a school walkout to support the Second Amendment, two weeks after students around the country participated in a massive walkout to honor the victims of the Parkland shooting and demand stricter gun control.
You probably didn’t hear about it, did you? That’s because it wasn’t plastered all over the news with wall-to-wall coverage, mostly because it was small in numbers – only 75 students showed up for a protest that lasted 20 minutes. After all, it took place at Rockledge High School in Rockledge, Fla., as opposed to virtually every school in the country.
Students who participated in Friday’s walkout said they felt silenced by the March 14 pro-gun control walkout, and wanted their voices to be heard in the conversation as well.
“I’m pro-Second Amendment. I wouldn’t mind deeper background checks, of course, but the Second Amendment will not be infringed upon,” student Anna Delaney told WFTV9-ABC.
Apart from articles written in a few local outlets as well as right-leaning ones (i.e. Fox News and Breitbart), the pro-Second Amendment walkout was barely a blip on the radar for mainstream outlets.
If we’re going to pretend that our children’s opinions matter and that we should try to amplify their voices, why are pro-Second Amendment students not getting the same treatment? Right now, the face of the 18-and-under pro-Second Amendment movement is Kyle Kashuv … and that’s it. Meanwhile, you have David Hogg, Emma Gonzales, and Cameron Kasky leading the pro-gun control movement.
And the students who are brave enough to speak out about things they feel passionately about should be commended, even if we disagree with their ideas and policy proposals. But, at this point, the mainstream media seems to have picked a side, and it’s not the one that wants to protect American’s civil rights and liberty.
