No day is more central to the health and fitness of our democracy than Election Day, so do whatever you have to do to get to the polls and cast your ballot for your preferred candidates.
And don’t forget these candidates endorsed by The Washington Examiner:
George Allen: Virginia’s incumbent Republican senator is a strong advocate of measures needed to win the war on terrorism, as well as an articulate, consistent voice in Congress on behalf of limited government, individual freedom and honesty in government.
Michael Steele: As the first-ever black candidate to win a statewide election, Maryland’s lieutenant governor is surging towards what could be a landmark victory by becoming the state’s first-ever black U.S. senator. Steele is a moderate conservative by philosophy and a gregarious, energetic and uplifting force on the campaign trail.
Robert Ehrlich: Maryland’s governor has compiled a strong record for fiscal sanity during his first term in Annapolis and by vigorously opposing the frequent outbursts of nonsense from the Old Guard Democrat power barons of the state legislature who would rather keep the state locked in a one-party monopoly.
Douglas Gansler: The sometimes-brash-but-always-determined Montgomery County state’s attorney won national plaudits for his determined prosecution of the Washington snipers and he will be an aggressive, effective Maryland attorney general.
Anne McCarthy: Capable, qualified and methodical are three good ways to describe the woman who should succeed the legendary William Donald Schaeffer as Maryland’s comptroller. She views the comptroller position as state government’s chief financial officer and promises to conduct the office in a nonpartisan fashion. Peter Franchot, her Democrat opponent, is a professional Washington lobbyist.
Virginia congressional candidates: The Washington Examiner endorsed Republican incumbents Reps. Frank Wolf and Tom Davis, as well as challenger Tom O’Donoghue, who is opposing incumbent Democrat Rep. Jim Moran. Davis and Wolf are influential veterans who know how to get things done in Congress. O’Donoghue is a decorated combat veteran who would be a refreshing and much-needed breath of fresh air for the Alexandria-dominated district.
Maryland congressional candidates: The Washington Examiner endorsed Democrat incumbents Steny Hoyer, Al Wynn and Chris Van Hollen. Wynn is a cagey, independent thinker who survived a scary primary, while Van Hollen represents traditional liberal Democrats in Montgomery County. Hoyer would make a fine speaker of the House should his party regain majority status.
Also, The Washington Examiner endorsed mayoral candidate Adrian Fenty in the District and Ike Leggett for Montgomery County executive during the September primary. Because only a totally unexpected political earthquake of unprecedented magnitude could prevent the long-standing Democratic dominance from continuing in those jurisdictions, we fully expect Fenty and Leggett to be inaugurated to their respective offices in January. And we expect both to perform admirably.
