Tell it, Sister
WHO: The Maryland State Police

WHAT: Not only did they spy on activists and put them in a database of possible terrorists, now we find out that state police put two Dominican nuns in the database too. The nuns say they didn’t participate in protests during the time they were entered into the database — and we’re pretty inclined to believe the sisters.
WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: This could be a sign of an even larger problem than we had previously realized. Could this have been a problem for years that we’re only just finding out about? The investigation needs to be open, lawyers need to be present and people need to be removed from the database.
WHY THEY ARE DOING IT: Damage control? Whatever it is state police needed to fix it yesterday.

BRIGHT BULB: Helping students help others. Howard High School is working with various programs to give back to the community. The students are raising money and awareness of the county’s homeless children, and they’re getting a great foundation in public service early in life. Even acts as simple as making sandwiches for the homeless or donating nickels from soda machine change can help — especially if entire schools are helping out.
QUOTE: “One of the things that people often do when the economy turns down is go back to school … We’re growing mostly in places we said we were going to grow, so they were able to kind of use foresight and hire people and make sure they have the balance we hope to have.” — Ben Passmore, University System of Maryland’s director of policy research and analysis.
