WHO: Maryland’s funeral home owners
Recommended Stories
WHAT: A Maryland law states that only state-licensed funeral directors may own funeral homes — which is like saying only pilots can own airlines. We know this law is immoral — and a federal court is deciding whether it’s unconstitutional.
WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: The regulation has basically created a cartel — and it’s costing the bereaved about $800 more than they ought to be paying for a funeral. This is just one more example of the ways Maryland loves to keep entrepreneurs away from our state. Why does it matter who owns the funeral home as long as the person conducting the funeral has the appropriate state license?

Today’s dim bulb: Heil to the chief
We haven’t been President Barack Obama’s biggest supporters, so it probably won’t shock anyone that we do not support hanging his photo in every state building, the goal of legislation sponsored by Maryland Senate Majority Whip Lisa Gladden. But we’re not against it because of how we feel about Obama — we’re against it because of how we remember, say, Adolf Hitler. His picture was required to hang in every state building. And what about the cost associated with putting his framed photo everywhere — or the continued cost? We’d have to change the photos every time a new president was elected. Let’s dispense with the sycophantic presidential backside kissing and focus on pressing state issues.
