Texas Gov. Rick Perry assaulted the Social Security system at a debate on Wednesday, calling it a “Ponzi” scheme that deserves a complete overhaul.
“It is a monstrous lie — it is a Ponzi scheme — to tell our kids that are 25 or 30 years old today — you are paying into a program that’s going to be there [in the future],” Perry said. Former senior adviser to President Goerge W. Bush Karl Rove has criticized Perry for that comparison, but Perry said he stands by his words.
“You know Karl has been over the top for a long time in some of his remarks, so you know, I’m not responsible for Karl anymore,” Perry said.
With every candidate on stage aiming to tear down Perry’s record throughout the evening, Perry remarked, “I kind of feel like the pinata here at the party.”
