Monica Conyers’ Best Hits

In case you haven’t been following the news from the Motor City, U.S. House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich. is experiencing a continuing headache.

His wife, Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers (D), has resigned from the Detroit City Council effective next week. On Friday, she pleaded guilty to accepting bribes in exchange for supporting a $1.2 billion city sanitation contract for the company Synagro Technologies. In addition to losing her position, she faces up to $250,000 in fines and five years in prison at sentencing.

Before the bribery scandal, Conyers was best known for participating in a 2005 bar fight, and for disrespecting her colleagues in debate and allegedly making physical threats on the job.

Congressman Conyers: “This has been a trying time for the Conyers family and, with hope and prayer, they will make it through this as a family. Public officials must expect to be held to the highest ethical and legal standards. With this in mind, Mr. Conyers wants to work towards helping his family and city recover from this serious matter.”
