GOP demands answers from HHS on CLASS Act

Earlier today, I reported on the confusion over whether President Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services had decided to shut down a controversial program created by the national health care law. Now, Republicans in both chambers of Congress charged with oversight of the agency have sent out a letter demanding answers.

The CLASS Act is a long-term care program on shaky financial ground. The GOP released a report last week, citing internal emails showing that the Obama administration ignored repeated warnings that the CLASS Act was unsustainable as it rushed toward passage of the broader health care law.

This morning, the man hired as actuary of the program said he was leaving HHS and the department was shutting down the office created to run the program. HHS later issued a statement insisting the office hadn’t been closed, while acknowledging that it had been downsized and that whether the program gets implemented remains an “open question.”

This evening, 13 Republicans have sent out a letter demanding more information and documents from HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, about her intentions for the CLASS program and its underlying financial stability. You can read a PDF of the letter here.
