Paul #1, Perry #4 in Values Voters straw poll

Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, took a strong first place finish over his Republican presidential primary opponents in the Values Voters Straw Poll today, winning with 37 percent of the straw poll vote. Complete results are available here.

“Dr. Paul is a humble man of faith, who has personally delivered more than 4,000 babies, so he’s well acquainted with the sanctity of life,” said Paul’s campaign spokesman Jesse Benton in a statement on the poll results, adding that Paul “never fails to connect the worthiness of the liberty message he champions with that system’s moral superiority over schemes that promote coercive government activism leading to the breakdown of the American family.”

In second place, Herman Cain received 23 percent, after winning post-debate straw poll in Florida by capitalizing on Perry’s weak debate performance. Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., placed third with 16 percent. Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, – expected to appeal strongly to evangelical voters, especially after his national prayer rally-  continued his post-Orlando debate slide. Perry placed fourth in the straw poll, with 8 percent of the vote.

It was not Mitt Romney’s finest hour. The putative frontrunner for the GOP nomination finished with just 4 percent of the vote.
