After a day of buildup, beginning with a Wednesday night Drudge siren touting a “bombshell” interview, ABC aired its feature with Newt Gingrich’s ex-wife Marianne and it largely under whelmed. The most explosive charge in the interview — that Gingrich requested an ‘open marriage’ — came out earlier in the day, and Newt swatted it away with a bazooka during the debate.
I’d be surprised if anything else will garner new headlines tomorrow. Though one comment that could come back to haunt Gingrich didn’t have to do with his adultery, but when his ex-wife claimed that they had always planned on him making a lot of money once he got out of Congress. That feeds into the charge that he made millions of dollars as a lobbyist for Freddie Mac, essentially profiting off of his connections. This was a line of attack that destroyed him in Iowa.
But as for the adultery issue, he may have neutralized it in South Carolina with his pugilistic debate answer.
