Huntsman: Republicans must not ‘run’ from science

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman accused Republicans of risking their party’s validity by “running from science.”

In order for the Republicans to win in 2012, “we can’t run from science,” Huntsman said during the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday.

Huntsman said the Republican field of candidates is threatening their party’s chances of winning the general election by making “comments that fly in the face of what 98 percent of climate scientists have said.”

“By making comments that basically don’t reflect the reality… we turn people off,” Huntsman added.

Asked to respond to Huntsman’s claims, Texas Gov. Rick Perry called global warming “nonsense.”

“Science is not settled on this,” he said. Lawmakers should “find out what the science truly is before you start putting the American economy in jeopardy,” he said.
