McDonnell tapped for full term as RGA head

This afternoon Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was elected chair of the Republican Governor’s Association for 2012. McDonnell’s election was no surprise. He took over as chair in August when Texas Governor Rick Perry left the post to run for President. At the organization’s quarterly meeting in Orlando today, McDonnell was elected to a full term.

McDonnell had previously served as vice-chair, a position that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie won at the meeting.

McDonnell’s Political Action Committee, Opportunity to Virginia, announced the rest of the governors elected to the RGA Executive Committee:

Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Governor Susana Martinez of New Mexico, Governor Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania, Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina, and Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin. Additionally, Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana was elected to serve as RGA Policy Chairman to lead the Republican Governors Public Policy Committee.

McDonnell is not eligible to seek a second term as Virginia’s governor, but he might have bigger things in his future. Were he selected as a 2012 vice-presidential candidate, Christie would likely assume his role as chairman.
