You talkin’ to me? Really? (ap photo)
In the mad cable news scramble to fill airtime with fresh voices on the Sonia Sotomayor nomination, CNN had perhaps the most enigmatic booking today: former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
“It’s good to see you, Wolf,” he said.
Gonzales, whose legal musings are back in the spotlight amid coverage of harsh detainee interrogation tactics, has been popping up lately — at the recent White House Correspondents Association dinner — on various prospective witness lists, and now on cable, musing about Latino jurists, judicial activism and more.
“I — I think it’s dangerous when judges impose their own personal views with respect to the outcome of — of a particular case,” he allowed.
Asked by Blitzer whether he was worried about disbarrment “or worse” in the wake of Bush-era Justice Department memos authorizing harsh interrogation tactics, Gonzales said he fears the “chilling effect” it may have on lawyers in the future.
“What I worry about, Wolf, is that good people, well-intentioned people, serving in a historic — historically difficult time, dangerous time in our nation’s history may be penalized for — for doing their best, simply providing the best legal advice that they can,” Gonzales said.
Don’t call it a comeback — I’ve been here for years!
