What would have happened had Scott Brown or one of his proxies made a Chappaquiddick joke this week?
He would have collapsed in the polls, I think, and his chances of winning would have gone from 50% to about zero.
With that hypothetical in mind, is it implausible to think Democrats, including President Obama, were deliberately trying to coax Republicans into making Chappaquiddick jokes? It’s a crazy-sounding conspiracy theory, but it explains why Democrats would use these analogies:
Chris Van Hollen went on TV, and in the context of the Mass. Senate race said:
Why would you hand the keys to the car back to the same guys whose policies drove the economy into the ditch and then walked away from the scene of the accident? [h/t Jonah Goldberg]
What does that make you think of?
And Obama wasn’t as explicit, but picking on Brown for driving a truck seemed odd, didn’t it? What about this line?
So I’d think long and hard about getting in that truck with Martha’s opponent.
Were they baiting Brown to joke about Kennedy?
