Cornel West: Free markets not the public interest

Cornel West posited a dichotomy between free markets and the “common good” today as he called for “massive investment” in government programs to fight poverty.

West called for economic theory to be “tied to public interest” during a Morning Joe segment. “Common good — not just free markets, unregulated, unfettered or relatively regulated, as if public interest is an afterthought,” he explained.

West then said that Congress should avoid austerity measures in favor of “massive investment” on a scale proposed by Paul Krugman in End this Depression Now, in which he argues that “a burst of federal spending ended the Great Depression, and we desperately need something similar today.”
