Newt Gingrich suggested today that Rick Santorum could be, unintentionally, helping Mitt Romney, arguing that “if Romney beats me” in Florida, it will have happened because Santorum divided the anti-Romney conservative vote.
“Santorum and I collectively are bigger than Romney, but Romney beats me as long as we split the conservative vote,” Gingrich said on Fox News Sunday. “And we have a tremendous effort underway to reach out to conservatives to get them to see that the only effective to stop a Massachusetts liberal from becoming our nominee is to vote for Newt Gingrich.”
Gingrich took a similar message to ABC’s This Week. “[W]hen you combine the Santorum vote and the Gingrich vote, we clearly are — the conservative combined would clearly beat Romney,” he said.
