Too far? Saturday Night Live mocks Mitt Romney’s ‘Mormon magic underpants’

Saturday Night Live’s debate themed election skit was pretty good. The crew accurately mocked the heated tone of the debate, portraying both Mitt Romney and President Obama as ready to fight each other on the debate stage.

But one line in particular stood out, as the actor playing President Obama told Romney that he would need to bring his “magic Mormon underpants” to the fight.

“Mr. President, if you don’t mind I’d like to answer Eugene’s very thoughtful question about gas prices, and then after that it’s you and me outside,” the actor playing Romney challenges.

“Oh really old man?” the Obama character reacts.

“Yeah that’s right, just the two of us, no Secret Service,” Romney replies.

“In that case you better bring your Mormon magic underpants,” Obama snaps back, as the live audience laughed.

The line about Romney’s Mormon temple garments has rarely surfaced during this election, except from New York Times columnist Charles Blow, who was roundly condemned for using it to attack Romney on Twitter.

Blow apologized afterward calling his comment “inappropriate.”

Is it too inappropriate for Saturday Night Live?
