Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., sent a stinging letter to President Obama criticizing his leadership on an issue that resonates across the political spectrum — from Tea Partiers to independent swing voters — and might position him well to run as Vice President with the Republican nominee.
“Any day now, news reports suggest you will ask Congress to approve another increase in the debt ceiling,” Rubio wrote Obama, promising to oppose the upcoming $1.2 trillion debt ceiling increase. “Using your own standard [as Senator], this request will mark your sixth ‘sign of leadership failure’ on the debt ceiling issue alone,” Rubio added, calling Obama’s presidency thus far “a profile in leadership failure.”
Why did Rubio send this letter today? “The letter speaks for itself,” Rubio spokesman Alex Conant told The Washington Examiner. Conant said that Rubio was not writing this apropos of some Senate committee work he was undertaking — Rubio serves on: Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; Foreign Relations Committee; Select Committee on Intelligence; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee; — and affirmed moments later that Rubio just wanted to notify President Obama of his position.
