More voters saw Gingrich than Romney as the most electable. That suggests that South Carolina Republican voters took very seriously Gingrich’s claim that he can beat Barack Obama in debates. But that’s out of line with current national polls, which show Romney trailing Obama by a statistically insignificant 47%-45%, while Gingrich trails him 51%-40%.
